On the backside of this photograph is written: "Richard E. Saddler Pro. baseball picture [pitcher] & me. He is in Tokyo in the Hospital with a broken pelvis." On the basis of what is said in the DSJs, this happened on 30 May 1967, when he fell off a boulder.

The band is Pam Hird's Herd from New South Wales, Australia, playing New Orleans jazz. Pamela and Llew Hird played for Australian and US forces during their Vietnam tour.

Pamie Hird is on the trumpet; Llew Hird on the trombone; and Bill Brunskill on the banjo.

On May 16 at 0320 hours, an NCO encountered a tiger lurking behind this mess hall. It sauntered off towards the perimeter. See this map.

These photos of other buildings at An Khê were also shot in the early morning. The left picture shows the HQ building for A 1/8 Cavalry. In the right picture, Hong Con mountain can be seen in the background behind this unidentified building.

A small sump is seen in the center with C-ration trash in it. This is probably a break taken during a barbwire stringing detail on an LZ.

On June 7, the DSJ (for 1530 hours) says, "A boy tells "A" Company that 2 NVA spent the night in his village at 840800.” The Company set up in Thach Long (2) for an hour and a half while artillery was called in on the suspected NVA position, after which the Company was flown back to LZ Pony.

The photo on the right is of a segment of the Lai Giang River just to the east of Bong Son. The high point on the ridge to the center right bears the Army map coördinates of 898956 (14.427523, 109.045247) as shown on the Map. Behind the tip of the front rotor blade of the trailing chopper is the town of Bong Son lost in the mist.

This coastline can be identified on contemporary aerial photos. The edge of the shore to the left is at coördinates 930154 and extends to 926167, and the second picture extends from 928152 to 924186. The helicopter formation is gaining altitude to make a left turn to fly over the mountains about 4 klts. farther north (see Map). The dark patch of jungle on the summit of the distant mountain is a point of correlation between the two pictures.

This is a picture of about half of the First Platoon. The LZ is English, where the photo was shot at an azimuth of 173°, just east of true south, at about 0809 hours, sun time (see Illustration). Due to a singular dust mark found on a half dozen photos and shared by this one, this picture can be dated sometime near July 2. The DSJs show that the First Platoon was at English for the first time on June 26, and didn't return until July 21, so the earlier date seems preferable. The Platoon was sent in from the field, but not for a rest, as was hoped, but for duties, in this case, probably starting with erecting the tent seen to the formation's left. Most of us were hoping instead to visit Bong Son.

At left, Sgt. Douglas and Ed House are preparing for an ambush, as can be seen by the camouflage they have put on their faces. In the photo on the right, Jerry Prater, seen here in front of a grave in the white sands area on the northern outskirts of Hung Nhon, is also wearing camouflage on his face. That night the Second Squad went out on ambush at coördinates 737155.

Both of these birds are Common Mynas (Acidotheres tristis), a relative of the Starling. They are omnivorous and eat most of the foods eaten by humans, and frequent our houses and garbage dumps. They are the only known creature for whom C-rations are an appealing meal.

This was shot where my machine gun was posted at the opposite end of the village, Liêu An (1). The tank can be made out with some difficulty to the right of the hooch above which is a column of gray smoke. See the Map showing this action.

The small pile of debris on which the body of the NVA killed in this action by Gunsaulas was later set afire, and was about where the flames may be seen in this photo. See the two accounts of Root's death (1, 2).

The scene at left is the plowing of the area where the underground hospital complex was located in Liêu An (1), centered on the building where Root was killed and Gunzaulas wounded. It was the general opinion of those present at the Cav Reunion at Branson in October 2015 that the right picture shows that same plowed up area. Jerry Prater is sceptical since no one in this formation has either web gear or weapon. Close examination shows that the group is being led in prayer, as everyone's head is bowed and some are even kneeling.

A few figures (center left) of the advancing First Platoon can be made out through the thick foliage of the An Lão Mountains somewhere between coördinates 742997 and 747027.

What appears to be the Lai Giang River is in the background with large rice paddies more to the foreground. The armored vehicle seems to be a tank rather than a duster.

This is the bridge, later renamed "Yelland Bridge," where the firefight of September 24 occurred. Westenberger's squad was guarding the bridge the day before (see Map).

A large enemy bunker can be seen emerging from the hedge row in the background. The bunkers were a couple of years old and had not been used in the interim. At this time the An Lão Valley was largely abandoned and the dikes and fields can be seen in this set of photos to be overrun by grass.

There is an old enemy bunker just behind Alcala's head about 20 meters away.

This outhouse was largely made from boards taken from discarded ammo boxes. A recoilless rifle can be seen set up behind the outhouse.

The hill in the background on the reverse side of its summit, is the site upon which LZ Tape was built.

Lt. Church was the Platoon Leader for the First Platoon. Since the film was developed in Jan., 1968, the photo must have been shot in December or early January. The LZ can therefore be determined by exclusion.
